To create a worldwide community that encourages education, collaboration, and discussion amongst hepatology trainees
The story behind the creation of Liver Fellow Network (LFN) involves timing, determination, and enthusiasm.
As of early 2020, the free open-access medical education movement had been ongoing for many years and already spanned multiple medical specialties. Still, it had not yet infiltrated hepatology. Enter the coronavirus pandemic, when all types of medical training programs were forced to rethink the processes involved in resident and fellow education. Zoom conferences and Twitter-based discussions abounded.
At that time, Hersh, who was a GI fellow at Northwestern and a future transplant hepatology fellow, felt even more strongly the need for more online resources for trainees interested in liver. He only had a small network of friends and co-fellows interested in pursuing a career in hepatology, but it was more than enough. He teamed up with Lizzie, Parita, Adam, and Alex. Together, the five of them created LFN as a collaborative initiative aiming to facilitate learning and engagement amongst all trainees interested in hepatology.
